In order to minimise cases of mortality due to impact on the ski area, cable monitoring is carried out in conjunction with the Vanoise National Park (PNV).
Every year, a working meeting is held between the ski resort and the Vanoise National Park (PNV) to identify the cable systems that pose the greatest risk to birds . The cables are then classified into three categories, defining the degree of risk they present to birds. The cables considered at risk are progressively equipped with bird markers . These devices allow birds to better see the infrastructure.
What is Birdmark?
At S3V we mainly use "Birdmark" type viewers.
It consists of an orange circular racket with a diameter of 16 to 70 mm and a UV-resistant spring clamp. It is attached to the cables of the multi-pairs of the teleporters using a telescopic pole or by drone.
These markers, made of luminescent materials and placed on the cables of ski lifts (chairlifts, gondolas, ski tows), reduce the risk of collisions for birds by increasing their visibility . This is particularly important in low light or fog.
