To protect mountain birds, and at the initiative of the Vanoise National Park, an agreement has been in place since 2019, bringing together operators and numerous partners. A third agreement (2025-2027) was signed with stakeholders in March 2025.
Why a convention on the scale of the 3 Valleys?
The stakeholders of the 3 Valleys ski area, in collaboration with the Vanoise Natural Park, have been committed for years to preserving local fauna and flora. They are setting up infrastructures aimed at improve the daily lives of different species.
Among them, the Black grouse, considered an "umbrella species," plays a key role. By preserving its habitat and providing protected areas without skiers, we allow many other species to thrive. However, changes in outdoor activities have impacted the habitat of the Black Grouse, as well as that of the Rock Ptarmigan and Royal Eagle in the Alps.
In order to reduce these effects, measures have been put in place, such as the creation of refuge areas where the winter tourist presence is limited or even prohibited. These provisions make it possible to preserve these emblematic species and to ensure a balance between sporting activities and biodiversity.
The targeted objectives
This agreement allows for the equipping of emblematic mountain birds ( Black Grouse , Rock Partridge , Ptarmigan , and Eagle ) with GPS trackers to better understand the animals' spatial behavior, identify their home ranges, and understand their interactions with human activity. The objective is to improve existing protection measures (such as quiet zones) and better integrate the ecological niches of these species into future ski area developments.
